The District of Hope may provide permissive tax exemptions to eligible organizations that deliver meaningful benefits to the community. This program is one way Council can support organizations that enhance quality of life in Hope through social, cultural, recreational, charitable, or community-based services. As outlined in the District’s policy, permissive tax exemptions are granted at Council’s discretion and may be approved in full, in part, or not at all.
Who Can Apply?
Applications may be considered from eligible organizations such as:
Non-profit organizations
Charitable or philanthropic organizations
Athletic or service clubs/associations
Care facilities or licensed private hospitals
Organizations delivering services in partnership with the District
Other qualifying entities under the Community Charter
To be considered, the organization’s use of the property must demonstrate a clear benefit to the community, such as providing recreation, youth or senior programming, cultural or educational services, heritage preservation, or other public benefit initiatives.
Application Process
Permissive Tax Exemption applications are reviewed annually as part of the District’s financial planning process.
Applications must be submitted before July 31 in the year prior to the taxation year for which exemption is requested.
Applications typically require supporting documentation, including:
Financial statements

Details regarding any third-party use of the property
Confirmation that activities do not compete with licensed local businesses
All District fees and charges associated with the applicant must be current at the time of application.
Important Information
Permissive tax exemptions may be approved for a single year or, in some cases, for multiple years (up to 10 years), depending on the nature of the community benefit provided.
Council may apply conditions to approved exemptions, including limitations on property use or public access expectations.
