Water, Sewer and Stormwater

Water

The District of Hope Water Systems have a total value of approximately $55 million, including 60 km of pipes.  The existing water supply and distribution system has been constructed in the period since the early 1940’s. The District operates four water systems, as follows:

1. 87m and 138m pressure zones in the central area;
2. Silver Creek;
3. East Kawkawa Lake;
4. Lake of the Woods.

Groundwater is the primary water source used by the District. One exception to this is the Lake
of the Woods area, which is a small system using surface water.

Sanitary Sewer 

The sanitary system has a total value of approximately $57 million, including 49 km of gravity pipes and 7 km of forcemains. The existing wastewater collection and treatment system has been constructed in the period since the early 1960’s. Some key dates in the development of the system are as follows;

  • 1960s First sewers constructed in the Town of Hope.
  • 1970s Trunk sewer constructed to a new treatment plant in Silver Creek. Sewers constructed in the Kawkawa Lake area.
  • 1980s Sewers constructed in Silver Creek.
  • 1980 Construction of original Pollution Control Centre and outfall.
  • 1993 District takes responsibility for the Pollution Control Centre.
  • 1999 Third treatment cell added at the Pollution Control Centre.
  • 2017 Pollution Control Centre lagoons re-configured and aeration replaced.
  • 2018 Dissolved air flotation system constructed at Pollution Control Centre.

Stormwater

The District’s stormwater system has a total value of approximately $28 million and consists of several hundred manholes, many hundred catchbasins, approximately 50 discharge locations (outfalls, rockpits, infiltration points), and nearly 37km of pipe of various size, material, and age.
