MAIL BALLOT VOTING INFORMATION
2018 General Local District of Hope Elections

1.  WHO CAN VOTE BY MAIL?
On Saturday, October 20, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the District of Hope will hold the General Local Elections and School Trustee Elections for 1 Mayor, 6 Councillors and 3 School Trustees.

Electors may vote by mail if they:

  • have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects their ability to vote at another voting opportunity, OR
  • expect to be absent from the District of Hope on general voting day and at the times of all advance voting opportunities.

2. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?
You are allowed to vote if you are registered as:

  • a resident elector (i.e., you live in the District of Hope OR
  • a non-resident property elector (i.e., you live elsewhere in BC but own property in the District of Hope.

ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS:

RESIDENT ELECTORS:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election; and
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a resident of the District of Hope for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act [Vancouver Charter], [School Act] or any other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.

NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY ELECTORS:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election or assent voting; and
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a registered owner of real property in the District of Hope for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  • not entitled to register as a resident elector; and
  • the only persons who are registered owners of the real property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act [Vancouver Charter], [School Act] or any other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law; and
  • if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.

3. HOW DO YOU REGISTER TO VOTE?

The District of Hope does not use the Provincial Voters List; as per “Voting Day Registration Bylaw No. 1427, 2018” a person may register as an elector only at the time of voting.

4. REQUESTING A MAIL BALLOT PACKAGE

Before 4:00 p.m. on October 18, 2018 you must submit the following information to the District of Hope office (by mail, telephone, fax or email to jharknett@hope.ca.)

(1) Full name,
(2) Residential address,
(3) Address of the property in relation to which you are voting (for non-resident property electors),
(4) Method of delivery of your mail ballot package:
  (a) pick up at District of Hope office, OR
  (b) regular letter mail through Canada Post to residential address, OR
  (c) regular letter mail through Canada Post to an alternate address that you provide when requesting the ballot package,
(5) If you are not on the list of electors, to ensure you receive the correct registration application form in your package, you must indicate whether you are going to be registering as a resident or non-resident property elector.

The District of Hope will send out mail ballot packages commencing on or about October 3, 2018. To be counted for the election or assent voting, your mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8:00 p.m. on October 20, 2018.
